The feeling of being connected to others through meaningful relationships and interactions.
Relatedness significantly enhances human experiences by fulfilling the need for meaningful connections and relationships with others. When people feel genuinely connected, whether through family, friendships, or community, they experience a sense of belonging and emotional security. For example, residents in an assisted living community who become friends and learn about their caregivers’ personal lives develop close bonds, improving rapport and creating a supportive environment. These connections foster trust and increase residents’ motivation to follow important medication instructions and other community guidelines. The positive interactions and bonds formed through relatedness boost morale and happiness and encourage individuals to engage more deeply in their activities and responsibilities, knowing they have a network of support and empathy.
